Chapter Thirteen

Aurora bounced about in the seat of the Earl of Emerson’s coach, thrilled to finally be returning to River Crest. Jordan’s vehicle, a glorious contraption that smelled of rich leather, had been waiting when they exited the train. Tamsin had immediately fallen back against the squabs, exhausted from the journey which had consisted of an endless stream of stops and gave Tamsin far too much time to consider the Duke of Ware.

The parting with Ware should not have pained her. Their association was one based on avoiding any further connection between them. Was it really such a surprise that Ware found her acceptable for a dalliance but not marriage? His reputation remained intact. Hers had dramatically improved. Lady Longwood had been silenced. For now. Aurora had been spared a gossip-filled debut. London now had a far different opinion of Tamsin Sinclair, for which she supposed she might be more grateful.

Excepting Lady Curchon, of course. Her opinion of Tamsin had not improved.

“I do wish Drew was here. And Malcom,” Aurora said, interrupting Tamsin’s thoughts.

Drew’s trunks had been brought down and loaded, but then just as unceremoniously unloaded. She’d seen Holly hand Drew a letter only moments before informing Tamsin that a business matter had come up, one which would delay his trip to River Crest. Strange considering her brother’s “business” mostly consisted of playing cards and tupping widows. Drew promised to be along in a day or two, but Tamsin wasn’t so sure.

“I’m sure Drew will arrive by the end of the week.” She took Aurora’s hand, allowing none of her feelings to show as the coach climbed a small rise. “And Malcolm promises to return home before your come-out. Hopefully, we will all be together for Christmas. Look.”

Tamsin pointed out the window as the estate of the Earl of Emerson came into view. How long had it been since she was home? Over a decade. The house on Bruton was lovely, of course, but River Crest had been where the Lord Emerson and his second family had spent most of their time and where Tamsin had grown up. After Bentley’s unexpected death, the entire family, excepting Malcolm because he was on the Continent, had gone to London before coming here, to support Jordan as he assumed the title and accepted the marriage being foisted upon him.

Yes, but that resolved itself in the best possible way.

“What do you think, Aurora, is River Crest as you recall?”

“Yes.” Her sister nodded solemnly.

Aurora had been little more than a child when Bentley banished the family to Dunnings. It was doubtful she remembered anything of the estate, which made Tamsin unaccountably sad. This had been their home, so much more than the London house. But perhaps that wasn’t the case for Aurora. She adored life in town, as did Drew. Staying in London while Jordan and Odessa retired to River Crest had been as much for Aurora as to give the newlywed couple time alone.

Now, finally, her father’s estate, her home, spilled out before Tamsin like a long lost jewel.
